The familiar sound of whistles blaring and people cheering can only mean one thing: there is a pep rally in the gym. Students for many years have assembled in the gym of New Hope High School for weekly pep rallies, and this year has been no different. Recent news, however, has reported that there will be fewer pep rallies this year at New Hope. Pep rallies are there for the football players and for the school; they are a time for students to be able to show their school spirit and have some fun.

At the last pep rally, students participated in a “color war” and were able to sign up and participate in games in front of the whole school. These are great opportunities for students to get involved. They allow time for students to show their support for the school and the football team. Pep rallies inspire enthusiasm and allow everyone to participate.

Pep rallies are also great for the dance team, cheer team, and the band. They provide opportunities for these teams to perform and have fun as well. Every pep rally gives these teams a chance to show the school what they are doing.

Another great aspect of pep rallies are the spirit stick cheers. Each grade takes turns yelling, ‘V-I-C-T-O-R-Y, that’s the Trojan battle cry” as they clap and cheer along. The loudest class receives the “spirit stick.” At the last pep rally, the band won the spirit stick. This event encourages teamwork as the classes band together in a friendly competition to see who has the most spirit.

Pep rallies are a great time not only for the football team and cheer team, but also for the entire student body. They allow students to get more involved with the football games by encouraging school spirit and supporting the football players. It is for these reasons that we should have more pep rallies, not less. Let’s stir up the school spirit and be enthusiastic on our way to victory!
